Two Tricks To Clear Your Clogged Drain

by Derrick Gordon

It can be very frustrating to have a clogged drain in your home, especially if you cannot figure out how to fix it on your own. Instead of calling your local plumber at the first signs of trouble, try these two DIY tricks that can get your drains flowing again. They are all natural solutions that will clear a clog without using harmful chemicals.

The Boiling Water Technique

A very easy way that you can clear a clog is to pour boiling water down your drain. It is as simple as putting a pot on your stove and waiting for your water to boil.

Once the water is to a roaring boil, immediately remove the pot from your stove and pour a little bit of water down the clogged drain. You want to go very slowly at first, making sure to not fill up the sink with water. Once the first bit of water has gone down the drain, keep pouring more in until all of your boiled water is gone.

Give the water a couple minutes to work its way through the clog, then turn on your water and see if it cleared it. If it did not work, you may want to try pouring more boiling water down the drain, or attempt another technique.

The Vinegar and Baking Soda Technique

You may recall an old trick from science class where mixing vinegar and baking soda together can create an explosive reaction. While it worked great back then to make a fake volcano, it also works for unclogging a drain.

One way to do it is to mix 1 part vinegar and 1 part baking soda in a bowl. When the two ingredients start to react, you can quickly pour them down your drain. Let the fizzing concoction work its way through the clog for about two hours before attempting to run water through the drain again.

The alternate method would be to put your baking soda in the drain first, and then pour the vinegar into the drain slowly. Stop pouring vinegar when you've used enough to cause fizzing to happen. You'll need to wait a couple hours with this technique as well to see if the solution can work its magic on your clog.

If you tried these tricks and still cannot get your drain unclogged, you may need to contact a plumb perfect drain cleaning plumber to have whatever is in your pipes removed with a snake.
