If you suspect that your current roof might need to be replaced soon, then it is prudent to consider the different roofing options you have. It's very important to make sure you understand the pros and cons of each roofing material before you choose one. A roof should last a long time, and it is a major investment, so you don't want to make a mistake when choosing materials.

Cedar Shingles

Cedar shingles look great. If you are looking for a roofing material that looks pretty and is also natural, then few things beat cedar. If it is maintained properly, it will last a very long time. However, that maintenance is a downside to consider. Unlike synthetic roofing materials, cedar shingles need to be cared with regular check ups. Mold, moss, and mildew are all things that can shorten the lifespan of the cedar. So, if you are not up to paying someone to do annual roofing maintenance, then perhaps cedar shingles are not for you.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt based shingles are perfect for people on a budget and who want a hassle free roof. They don't require much maintenance at all. If there are lots of overhanging trees above your roof, you might want to get up there in the fall and sweep off the leaves. But other than that, asphalt shingles are worry free. They are easy to install, which makes them one of the least expensive roofing options.

Copper Panels

Copper panels look amazing, but they are costly. However, they are also super durable. They hold up to weather and the elements much better than wood or asphalt. They won't rot because of mold or moss. They are a bit tricky to install, but once they are up, you can forget about them and not have to do any sort of maintenance.

Slate Shingles

Slate shingles are great if you have a classic home and want an authentic looking roof. They are heavy and durable. They won't rot due to wet leaves, moss, or snow. Slate is expensive to install though. This is because it is heavy and laborious to carry up to the roof, and the individual slate pieces are expensive. But if you're looking for a classic looking roof that will last virtually forever, then nothing beats slate.

Rubber (EPDM)

A popular new roofing material is a form of rubber called EPDM. The benefit to these types of roofs are that they are are resistant to mold, and are great for insulating. During the summer, these roofs will prevent the suns heat from making your home too hot. There are some drawbacks. The most prominent one is that EPDM roofs can be easily damaged by falling tree limbs or even a big antenna. So, if you are thinking of installing one make sure that there are no standing trees over the roof and be aware of any antennas.
